ECE 1520---Data Communications I



This is an in-depth course in the theory and practice of digital communication. Topics covered will include: review of signals and systems, signal space concepts, Markov chains, cyclostationarity and power spectrum, bandwidth; boundaries of communications; physical media; baseband transmission and Nyquist pulse shaping; baseband and passband PAM; alphabet design; multipulse transmission, multicarrier transmission and code-division multiplexing; binary and M-ary modulation; coherent and noncoherent receivers; optimum detectors, sequence detection and Viterbi algorithm.Linear and decision feedback equalization, fractionally spaced equalizers, adaptive equalization and stochastic gradient algorithm. Spectrum control: line codes, partial response signalling, continuous phase modulation.


Prerequisites:
Senior undergraduate communication courses covering a text such as Communication Systems, 3rd Edition, S.Haykin, Wiley.

E.A.Lee and D.G.Messerschmitt, Digital Communication, 2nd Edition, Kluwer, 1994. (Syllabus: Approximately Ch.1-12).

Grades: Final grades will be determined on the basis of two term tests and final examination.
